The Department of Biochemistry has been teaching biochemistry since 1949, formally establishing a professional department in 1959. It was granted the authority to confer master's degrees in 1978, doctoral degrees in 1986, and a postdoctoral research center in 1991. In 1995, the department was designated a key discipline in Jilin Province.
The department boasts a well-structured and highly skilled faculty. It currently has nine full-time faculty members, including one professor, five associate professors, and three lecturers; two of them are doctoral supervisors and four are master's supervisors. The teaching team consistently adheres to the principles of "rigorous scholarship and student-centered education", attaching great importance to teaching quality and curriculum development. The department has consistently received excellent evaluations in student evaluations, earning it a strong reputation. The department offers biochemistry theory and laboratory courses across multiple tracks, covering all medical disciplines, with an average annual planned teaching hours exceeding 2,500. We also offer 140 hours of biochemistry theory and 56 hours of laboratory instruction entirely in English for international students studying in China. The lab projects offered cover basic biochemistry techniques, such as SDS-PAGE, enzymatic reaction kinetics, and γ-globulin extraction.
The department emphasizes the coordinated development of teaching and research. In terms of teaching, it actively participates in textbook development and teaching reform, continuously promoting curriculum innovation. Remarkable research has also been achieved. In the past three years, the department has published over 20 papers in CAS Zone 1 journals, including Cell, Molecular Cell, Bioactive Materials, and Advanced Functional Materials, and has received over 3 million yuan in research funding, demonstrating strong academic productivity and development potential. Going forward, the department will continue to prioritize high-quality teaching and research, deepen its core development, expand its academic influence, and cultivate more outstanding talent in biochemistry and related fields.
