On May 7, 2024, the University-Level Competition of the “10th National Forum on Undergraduate Innovation Research and Experimental Design in Basic Medicine”, hosted by the College of Basic Medical Sciences of Jilin University, was successfully held at the School of Basic Medical Sciences. A total of over 300 teachers and students from 60 teams across 8 schools, including the School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Public Health, School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing, Bethune First Clinical Medical College, Bethune Second Clinical Medical College, Bethune Third Clinical Medical College, and School of Stomatology, participated in this competition. The opening and closing ceremonies of the competition were presided over by Wang Fang, Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences.
More than 150 people attended the opening ceremony, including Zhao Guoqing, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Jilin University; Li Fan, Former University-Level Cadre and Dean of Bethune Medical Department; Zhang Yu, Deputy Director of the Academic Affairs Office; Sun Liankun, Former Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences; Li Zhiguo, Deputy Director of the Medical Education Office of the Medical Department; Wang Zhicheng, Vice Dean of the School of Public Health; Xu Huali, Vice Dean of the School of Pharmacy; Zhang Songling, Vice Dean of Bethune First Clinical Medical College; Wu Minfei, Vice Dean of Bethune Second Clinical Medical College; Gao Yufei, Vice Dean of Bethune Third Clinical Medical College; Qiao Chunyan, Director of the Teaching Department of Bethune School of Stomatology; leading group of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, instructors of the competition, and participating students.
Zhao Guoqing, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Jilin University, delivered a speech. He mentioned that the development of basic medicine is a decisive force for the progress of medicine. Universities bear the important mission of achieving original breakthroughs in basic research and cutting-edge technology fields, enhancing the country's original innovation capabilities, and serving the country's economic and social development. This is also the responsibility and mission of Jilin University's medical discipline. The goal of this competition is to promote the cultivation of talents with practical spirit and innovative ability in the new era. This forum has been held for nine consecutive sessions and has become the most influential undergraduate innovation design exhibition activity and basic medical discipline competition platform in the field of national basic medical education. Jilin University has achieved excellent results in previous forums and hosted the 8th National Final, which fully demonstrates the university's student-oriented educational philosophy that focuses on the cultivation of abilities and qualities. Finally, Vice President Zhao extended the warmest welcome to the participation of all expert judges, instructors, and students, and encouraged the contestants to go all out, strive for the best, and shine in the future regional competitions and national competitions.
At the opening ceremony, Professor Wang Fang, Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, stated that the instructors and students participating in this session cover all colleges and majors of the Medical Department, achieving a historic breakthrough in the largest number of participants and the widest coverage of majors. He said that this competition is a grand event for undergraduates to demonstrate and exchange their capabilities in basic medical innovation research and experimental design. It is of great significance for further promoting medical colleges and teachers to establish a student-oriented educational philosophy that focuses on the cultivation of abilities and qualities, accelerating the innovative development of medical education, and comprehensively improving the quality of medical student training. He sincerely thanked all the judges, experts, instructors, contestants, and staff from various colleges for their full support and cooperation in this competition.
Subsequently, Professor Sun Liankun, Former Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences of Jilin University and Chief Judge of this competition, delivered a speech. Professor Sun emphasized that this university-level selection competition would conduct track-based selection in accordance with the tracks of the national competition; strictly following the national competition standards, the participating teams would enter the meeting room for defense, with 5 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for Q&A. The competition process would strictly adhere to the principles of fairness and impartiality, abide by the competition rules, respect the contestants, and respect objective facts. The 60 participating teams were divided into 3 groups according to tracks for simultaneous defense: Group 1 included 22 teams in the Basic Clinical Track; Group 2 included 13 teams in the Traditional Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy Track and 6 teams in the International Forum Track; Group 3 included 9 teams in the Stomatology Track, 6 teams in the Preventive Medicine Track, and 1 team in the Interdisciplinary Track.

At the competition site, the contestants reported and presented their work from aspects such as experimental design, experimental ideas, experimental content, experimental results, feasibility and innovation, as well as team collaboration and division of labor. Five judges in each group raised questions based on the reported content and randomly assigned students to answer. The solid basic skills, team collaboration capabilities, spirit of pursuing excellence, and positive and optimistic attitude of each participating team won the recognition of the expert judges. Through the comments and guidance of the expert judges, each participating team not only recognized their own shortcomings but also clarified their learning and research directions for the next stage.
After a full day of fierce competition, the competition concluded successfully. The closing ceremony was presided over by Professor Wang Fang, Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences. A total of 9 gold awards, 11 silver awards, 21 bronze awards, and 19 excellence awards were presented in this competition. Among them, 20 works that won gold and silver awards will represent the university to participate in the Regional Competition of the “10th National Forum on Undergraduate Innovation Research and Experimental Design in Basic Medicine”. Professor Wang Fang, Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, delivered a closing speech. He extended warm congratulations to the works that achieved excellent results, expressed high respect to all judges who had worked hard, and sincere gratitude to all staff who ensured the smooth progress of the competition. Dean Wang emphasized that “the flame of innovation burns endlessly; the road of medicine has no end”. He hoped that the students would take scientific research training seriously, rely on their solid professional foundation and active innovative thinking to stand out in future competitions, win honors for themselves and the university, and make full preparations to become innovative and outstanding talents in the new era.
