Exploring Intangible Cultural Heritage, Telling Jilin’s Stories — Jilin University Hosts “Perceiving China” Social Practice and Cultural Experience Activity
Date:2026-10-13

On October 12, the 2026 “Perceiving China” Social Practice and Cultural Experience Activity, sponsored by the China Scholarship Council and undertaken by the College of Basic Medical Sciences of Jilin University, was successfully launched. Led by Cui Jiarun, homeroom teacher of Class 3, 2026 international students at the College of Basic Medical Sciences, together with staff from the International Student Office, more than 30 international students took part in field trips to the Changchun Museum of History and Culture and the Xinmin Avenue Historical and Cultural Block, They immersed themselves in Jilin’s regional history and culture and experienced the charm of fine traditional Chinese culture.

The international students first visited the Changchun Museum of History and Culture. Guided by a museum interpreter, they gained a systematic understanding of Changchun’s urban development, Northeast China folk customs, and intangible-cultural-heritage resources across Jilin Province. Cultural relics and historical documents showcased Jilin’s profound historical roots and vibrant intangible cultural heritage. During the tour, the students listened closely, paused often to view exhibits, and raised active questions for exchanges about historical anecdotes and traditional craftsmanship.

After the museum visit, teachers and students headed for the Xinmin Avenue Historical and Cultural Block, known as Jilin’s first “Famous Chinese Historical and Cultural Street”. The guide briefed international students on the block’s historical evolution. Its time-honored buildings now house teaching and medical facilities affiliated with Jilin University’s medical disciplines, continuing to serve public wellbeing. This gave international students first-hand insight into shifts in urban planning over time.

This cultural-experience event forms a key part of the “Perceiving China” series of social-practice activities for international students organized by the College of Basic Medical Sciences. Centered on historic architecture and intangible cultural heritage, the activity exposes international students to the unique appeal of the historical-cultural block and museum-preserved heritage, helping them appreciate the charm of traditional Chinese culture.

Moving forward, the College of Basic Medical Sciences will continue to use cultural experiences as a bridge to deepen international students’ understanding of Chinese culture. It aims to foster international students as friendship ambassadors who “understand China, befriend China and love China”, contributing to the further development of the “Perceiving China” initiative.
